The Watergate scandal was a sequence of illegal activities ordered by Nixon to increase the security of the White House by taking measures which may have been unconstitutional. The scandal started with the arrest of five men for breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters. The Watergate break-in occurred because of Richard Nixon's obsession with privacy. To stop leaks of information to the outside world, Nixon assembled a team of “plumbers” which contained former CIA agents. This private police force, which was funded by illegal campaign contributions, committed a huge variety of criminal acts, which included burglary and phone tapping, against people who were considered “enemies” of the White House.
